- What exactly is Speech Therapy? Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) work with communication disorders, evaluating, diagnosing, and treating speech and language disorders. Speech therapists are experts in all aspects of speech and language development, including receptive and expressive language, articulation, and fluency.Language and Speech Therapy:To stimulate language development, the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) interacts with a child by playing and talking, using pictures, books, objects, or ongoing events. To overcome the difficulties associated with a specific disorder, the therapist may interact with a child one-on-one, in a small group, or directly in a classroom. In addition, the SLP may use repetition exercises to build language skills and model correct vocabulary and grammar.
Articulation Therapy:
Misarticulation occurs when a child’s speech does not sound clear even after he is 7 or 8 years old. Misarticulation is simply mispronunciation of specific sounds in isolation, syllable, phrase, sentence, or conversation level. It is recommended that the child undergo articulation therapy in order to overcome this condition.
During the assessment, the SLP will conduct a detailed evaluation of the child’s speech using a few standardized test materials, and then his recorded speech sample will be analyzed bit by bit to determine the exact errors that the child exhibits while speaking. The SLP will determine whether the child is experiencing articulatory errors alone or if he is experiencing both.
