Counselling helps individuals dealing with developmental delay.

For a child developmental delays involves a not meeting the expected milestone at the expected time. Children grow at their own pace, but a developmental delay is more than just being “slower to develop” or “a little behind.” It means your child is continually behind in skills other kids his age have. Significant delays in achieving the milestones is an important red flag. These delays are significant lags in one or more areas of emotional, mental, or physical growth. If your child experiences a delay, early treatment is the best way to help him or her make progress or even to catch up.

They include problems with:

  1. Language or speech
  2. Vision
  3. Movement — motor skills
  4. Social and emotional skills
  5. Thinking — cognitive skills
  6. Sensory processing issues

Sometimes, a delay occurs in many or all of these areas. When that happens, it is called “global developmental delay.”

A few examples of developmental delays are:

Intellectual Difficulties:

Children with special needs or individuals of determination often learn at a slower rate than others. They can have problems with memory, thinking and learning. The degree of intellectual disability varies a lot from child to child.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD)

Autism spectrum disorder is characterized by social-interaction difficulties, communication challenges and a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviors. Each child or adult with ASD is unique. There may be relatively mild challenges for someone on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum. For others, symptoms may be more severe, as when repetitive behaviors and lack of spoken language interfere with everyday life.

Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects learning, concentration, and behavior. This condition causes persistent unrest, impulsive behavior, distraction, and over-activity. Children with ADHD may have difficulty in managing daily tasks at school and at home. ADHD is one of the most common disorders of childhood and may continue through adolescence and adulthood.

Special Learning Difficulties

Learning difficulties are neurologically-based processing problems. These processing problems can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing and/or math. They can also interfere with higher level skills such as organization, time planning, abstract reasoning, long or short term memory and attention.

They are:

  1. Reading Disorder or dyslexia
  2. Mathematics Disorder or dyscalculia
  3. Disorder of Written Expression or dysgraphia
  4. Nonverbal Learning Disorder

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disability that affects a child’s ability to control his muscles. It’s caused by damage to the brain while the brain is developing. Children with cerebral palsy can have problems like muscle weakness, stiffness, awkwardness, slowness and shakiness. They might also have difficulty with balance.

At LifeWorks, we offer detailed assessment and reporting on these conditions to agree on a comprehensive multidisciplinary management plan.
